The Boston Youth Symphony is the only youth orchestra in America to present a semi-staged opera performance. The response from the students and audiences was tremendous and since then, opera has become an integral part of BYSO’s season repertoire. In 2008, under the direction of BYSO Music Director, Federico Cortese, BYSO students performed their first semi-staged opera: Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte. Opera is a critical element in the training, understanding and appreciation of the full range of classical repertoire that is often overlooked in the musical training of young players. Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) believes that performing opera repertoire provides a deep musical and intellectual experience for young musicians and young audiences alike. Opera is an essential part of the BYSO experience.
